    We will meet in an indoor space at the Festival Center in Columbia Heights for a songful, soulful Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma'ariv, followed by potluck dinner. TLS will provide dessert! Covid rapid testing will be required and masks will be optional for this indoor gathering. To further mitigate Covid risks, there will be air filtration units and optional outdoor space for the potluck portion. Please get tested prior to attending, or allow for extra time to get tested on site. TLS has a limited number of Covid rapid tests for day-of testing. More Covid protocols below.

  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Class with the EDCJCC

    The Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED blended learning course equips participants to recognize and care for a variety of first aid breathing and cardiac emergencies involving adults and children. It is designed for those who need a certification that satisfies OSHA workplace or other regulatory requirements. Upon successful completion, a valid 2 year digital certificate from the Red Cross for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED is issued.

    This class is open to teens and adults ages 15+. It is taught in a blended learning format and the online portion must be completed prior to attending the instructor-led skills session. You will receive access to the online portion of the course upon registration. The in-person course will be taught by Christina Spann, EDCJCC Aquatics Manager.     Join NSP members for nights of summer song and Havdalah! Successful social movements and strong communities have one thing in common: embracing the soul-nourishing, community-building, and joy-sustaining power of singing together.

    During the heartbreak of this past year, NSP's Singing Team has gathered around a firepit each week to learn and lead new songs and nigunim. Now, we're bringing the community together for TWO "community sings" - public gatherings where people come together to sing collectively, focusing on shared joy, connection, and participation rather than musical perfection - to close out Shabbat and make havdalah together!

    Join us on July 19 and August 16 at 7:30-9:30pm to learn and sing together for our collective renewal and liberation. We'll gather outdoors weather permitting, in Petworth, location to be shared with registrants. Hardbacked chairs will be available.

  • Ukraine Genealogy Research in 2025 with Jewish Genealogy Society

    Opportunities for finding ancestral information in Ukraine records are increasing, even as war continues in Ukraine. The Ukraine Research Division of JewishGen expects to double its transcription rate and the resulting output for researchers, beginning in the second half of 2025. Phyllis Berenson, Director of the Ukraine Research Division will discuss the newly available records, how to access them, and research tips.

    This one-hour program, conducted over Zoom at 1:30 PM Eastern Time, is free for members. This is one of the many activities that is a benefit of JGSGW membership.   • Adult Group Swim with the EDCJCC

    Join the EDCJCC for a summer session of Adult Group Swim! These beginner classes will introduce basic aquatics skills and teach the skills and concepts needed to stay safe around water. Classes will be held in the shallow end of the pool, and each class is capped at 5 participants. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 22-August 7.

    Beginner 1 (7:30-8:00 PM): No prior experience needed! Goals include managing breath control; mastering floating or sculling; and swimming 3x body length in distance on both front and back.
    Beginner 2 (7:00-7:30 PM): Must have taken Beginner 1 already. Goals include rotary breathing; treading water for 15+ seconds; and swimming the length of the pool in both backstroke and freestyle.

    From the powerful drama of HalŽvy's La Juive, an opera of love, faith, and persecution, to subtle threads of Jewish identity woven into the works of Bizet, Saint-Sa‘ns, and others, this journey uncovers how opera became a space to express both cultural pride and profound struggle.
