The program will include mincha (afternoon prayer), learning about concrete ways to support immigrants, and other meaningful activities for anyone who does not wish to participate in the prayer service. This event for all ages, including kids (there will be banner painting!), and is outdoors rain or shine, so please dress accordingly. Please note there is limited shade and seating. At 5:00pm, we will meet back in DC (location TBA) to reflect on the pain of unlawful arrests, detentions, and deportations. The reflection is indoors and mask optional. During the Nazi occupation, Ruth survived multiple Nazi actions and the liquidation of the Skalat ghetto by hiding in basements, barns, and forests, with the help of courageous non-Jewish rescuers, including the Baranofski and Szewchuk families. Most of her family perished, but Ruth escaped with her siblings and members of the Sass family, eventually reaching a displaced persons camp in Italy. Ruth immigrated to the U.S. in 1947, where she built a new life, married fellow survivor Sidney Sass, and later Henry Eisenberg. In 2019, Yad Vashem honored her rescuers as Righteous Among the Nations. Free

Scholars and public intellectuals often cast antisemitism simplistically, identifying it as a conspiracy theory or as an individual defect. Yet exploring incidents of anti-Jewish bigotry, violence, and discrimination in U.S. history reveals a far more complex reality. What binds anti-Jewish episodes and movements in the United States is the desire to undermine and even eliminate Jews' civil and political rights. Historically, Christian nationalism, racial science, and conspiratorial thinking constitute the three forces that have inspired that objective. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is likely that you or someone you know will need a blood transfusion in your lifetime. Due to recent drastic shortfalls of donations over the last several weeks, donors of all blood types are critically needed, especially those with type O blood. The blood donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average. In order to qualify for whole blood donation, you must be in good health and feeling well, at least 16 years of age (with signed parental consent) and weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional eligibility criteria apply, including certain medications, medical conditions, travel to certain countries, and personal history. Pre-registered participants only. No walk-ins.

Since its founding, Free Minds has provided long-term, ongoing support to over 1,500 youth and adults. Volunteers will hear from Free Minds graduates about their experiences participating in the Free Minds program, then have the opportunity to read poetry written by current students and provide positive feedback through notes and drawings. While this may seem like a small gesture, many members share that receiving such encouragement reminds them that people in the community care and gives them strength to persevere. Rabbi Aaron facilitates a guided, nonjudgmental space for Jews and their non-Jewish partners to talk, learn, and grow - together and as individuals. Each week the class discusses case studies, written by the couples, on a specific instance that the Jewish and non-Jewish partner felt raised questions in their relationship. Text studies and articles supplement the class. Couples should make time for an additional hour each week to discuss the case studies with their partners. The workshop is held four to five times throughout the year. This cohort meets on Wednesdays, August 6 - 27 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. Rabbi Aaron facilitates a guided, nonjudgmental space for Jews and their non-Jewish partners to talk, learn, and grow - together and as individuals. Each week the class discusses case studies, written by the couples, on a specific instance that the Jewish and non-Jewish partner felt raised questions in their relationship. Text studies and articles supplement the class. Couples should make time for an additional hour each week to discuss the case studies with their partners. This is a revival of the occasional neighborhood cop watch strolls hosted by the justice team prior to the pandemic. We will also include a training on how to observe, document, and deescalate during the stroll. The schedule will be as follows: 7:00-7:20pm: Welcome 7:20-8:23pm: Cop Watch Training 8:23-8:40 pm: Havdalah (starting at sundown) 8:40-10:00pm: Neighborhood stroll and debrief Training, havdalah and debrief will occur outdoors in an NSP member's backyard in Petworth (exact location provided after RSVP). Participants learn both within the classroom and through immersion in the larger Sixth & I and DC community. This class is intended for people who are not Jewish, or have recently discovered Jewish ancestry. At the end of the program, non-Jewish participants will be prepared to convert to Judaism or to live as a Ger Toshav (Òfellow traveler') with the Jewish people. The annual course starts September 2 and runs through May 21, typically on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. This class includes a mix of lectures, group activities, text studies, and holiday celebrations. No Hebrew language knowledge is required. Those wishing to convert will meet with one of the rabbis individually during the year. The rabbi–in consultation with you–determines when you are ready for the actual conversion.
