Participants learn both within the classroom and through immersion in the larger Sixth & I and DC community. This class is intended for people who are not Jewish, or have recently discovered Jewish ancestry. At the end of the program, non-Jewish participants will be prepared to convert to Judaism or to live as a Ger Toshav (Òfellow traveler') with the Jewish people. The annual course starts September 2 and runs through May 21, typically on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. This class includes a mix of lectures, group activities, text studies, and holiday celebrations. No Hebrew language knowledge is required. Those wishing to convert will meet with one of the rabbis individually during the year. The rabbi–in consultation with you–determines when you are ready for the actual conversion. Consider meditation as one of those tools. There are many different types of meditation which serve many different goals. In this class, participants will explore Dharana, or One-Pointed Meditation, which, when practiced, will reduce stress, improve focus, and aid mental clarity by encouraging one to stay present. Learn briefly about the role of meditation in yoga and then try several one-pointed meditations, focusing on a single object such as the breath, a sacred image or image of a loved one, a sound, or a word or group of words, to name a few. Sometimes, we choose detours voluntarily while other times, detours are forced upon us. Either way, life rarely turns out the way we hoped or imagined. As the famous Yiddish phrase goes: Mann Tracht un Gott Lacht. ÒMan plans, God laughs.' It's hard to believe God is laughing at the way things have been going in our country lately. Some detours are one-way streets. ÒThat which has been twisted cannot be fixed' (Ecclesiastes 1:15). Have things become hopelessly broken, beyond repair? Is it too late to course correct? What is funny is that we continue to try to predict where this all leads. Whether we're hopeful or hopeless, many of us try to anticipate a future that hasn't yet come to pass. The ritual of Tashlich, or Òcasting away', is conducted during the Ten Days between the start of Rosh Hashana and the beginning of Yom Kippur. We'll kayak out together to a location on the Potomac River where Rabbi Aderet will guide us through this powerful and meaningful ritual.
