    A city's budget says a lot more than any politician's speeches about what is truly valued by the people we elect to represent us. Whether it's how much money is allocated towards eradicating homelessness or for job growth; helping increase education equity or support families; voters have the power to advocate for how the budget is allocated. Join organizers from Jews United for Justice (JUFJ) to learn about DC's budget process, past victories for social justice won through budget campaigns, and what you can do right now to ensure that next year's city budget reflects the Jewish social justice values that many of us share.

  • Think Jewishly, Act Locally: Speaking Your Truth to Power with JUFJ

    One of the most effective ways to speak truth to power is to testify before the DC Council. Hearing the stories and personal narratives of constituents helps move elected officials to take action on the issues that really matter. Join us for a workshop on how to create meaningful written testimony based on your personal story and values. We'll practice connecting your story to specific issues that are before the Council, and how to make policy change through righteous storytelling.

  • Labor Seder with Jews United for Justice

    Each spring, the JUFJ community comes together to retell the story of Passover and take action on local issues in our region. This year, more than ever, we need to remember that every generation has a responsibility to work toward collective liberation. ÒWe Move: From the Red Sea to the DMV,' at Temple Sinai in DC will focus on transit workers' rights, in partnership with ATU Local 689.

  • May Day with Jews United for Justice

    Celebrate International Workers Day with JUFJ as we march and rally in solidarity with our partners and workers everywhere. Join us at 11:30 AM for CASA's national day of action to demand justice for immigrants, and at 5:00 PM for a rally supporting DC restaurant workers. Buses leave from Baltimore for the CASA rally at 9:30 AM and from Montgomery County at 10:00 AM.

  • “Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round” Screening & Talkback with WHC

    When five Howard University students sat on a segregated Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. When the largely Jewish community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history was born.

    Produced and directed by Ilana Trachtman (daughter of WHC's longtime Hebrew teacher Gerdy Trachtman), the film has played at festivals across the country. Following the screening, there will be a discussion between Rabbi Sue Shankman and Pastor Mark Thomas of Contee AME Zion Church, moderated by Professor LaNitra Berger of George Mason University.

  • We Are All DC Shabbat Service with Jews United for Justice

    JUFJ and Sixth & I will hold a Shabbat Service to sing, pray, and hold each other in community immediately before the We Are All DC march begins. Following the service, we will gather and march together as a Jewish contingent in the march and rally.

    We encourage anyone coming to the service and march to bring a tallit (prayer shawl) as a symbol of our Jewish spiritual practice. If you have them, also please wear your JUFJ tshirt and bring any relevant JUFJ signs.

    Trump's occupation of DC has been shocking and horrifying - for immigrants, unhoused people, youth of color who are brutally targeted by federal agents, and for everyone in DC who cares about their neighbors and communities. It's important and urgent to galvanize our community members behind the demands of the moment! That's why on Sunday, September 28th, JUFJ is hosting this community meeting for Jews across the District to:

    - Come together and take stock of the moment we're in
    - Ground in community, art and song
    - Discuss our strategies to support our neighbors' immediate needs
    - Learn about opportunities to take powerful action.

    As we head into the Jewish New Year we are asked to heed the call to reflect, repent and renew, and ultimately turn that call into action. So, whether you've been active with JUFJ for years or you heard about us for the first time last week, this event is for you.
