The Rally will take place at the iconic steps of the Lincoln Memorial and will culminate with a march towards the US Capitol Building, ending with a global celebration at the WorldPride DC Street Festival and Closing Concert.

Join this interdisciplinary collaboration between musician, composer, and educator Zo‘ Aqua and music neuroscientist, artistic creator, and educator Dr. Jessica Phillips-Silver.

We will experience Jewish rhythms from slow and contemplative to fast and joyful, using traditional Yiddish dance gestures and simple, gentle movements to guide us deeper into the music. As we build our rhythmic repertoire, we will also explore the power of rhythm in our brain development across the lifespan, in our physical and emotional bodies, and in our collective past and future. Fusing musical and cultural perspectives with research in music neuroscience and healing traditions, this unique workshop will leave you feeling connected to your own voice and body, to Jewish cultural rhythms, and to the biological origins of human musical rhythm that we share with our entire human family.

Join us while we sip, study, and schmooze. In this 4-part series exploring the intersection of Jewish tradition and alcohol, we'll taste our way through wine, beer, and whiskey while diving into fascinating questions like: What makes whiskey kosher? Why are there a million rules about wine in Jewish law? Can beer ever substitute its grape-made cousin for ritual purposes? What's the story on brewing/fermenting your own booze?

Each session will feature a different kosher alcoholic beverage (plus non-alcoholic options) and thought-provoking Jewish learning in great company. We're building a cohort–so while we hope you'll come to all four sessions, drop-ins are still welcome if that's what works for you.

Jews are substantially overrepresented on the list of the songwriters of the standards that define the popular culture of the United States. The musicology behind that truth – the connections between Jewish liturgical chanting and folk songs and the jazz-influenced pop tunes American Jewish composers turned out – has been commented on a good bit. But what about the words? The roster of top lyricists in the American Songbook is also overwhelmingly Jewish, but what did that mean to their output? There are a few theories, all interesting and none completely convincing. We'll spotlight those theories, hear examples by, among others, Ira Gershwin, Yip Harburg, Oscar Hammerstein, Dorothy Fields, Stephen Sondheim. And, I hope, stimulate some discussion among ourselves of just how ÒJewish' these songs are.
