Join us on Thursday, May 21 for a dairy oneg featuring cheesecake bites at 6 p.m., followed by our Erev Shavuot service at 6:30 p.m.
On Erev Shavuot, we mark the end of the 49-day Omer count, and the revelation of the Torah at Mount Sinai. The service includes the ritual reading of the Ten Commandments, the singing of Hallel, and reflections from our rabbis. Yizkor will be read.
This year especially, we are drawn to give extra voice to the traditional reading for Shavuot: the Book of Ruth. Ruth is the righteous immigrant and paradigmatic convert, the outsider who becomes central to the Jewish story. In a time when immigrants are too often met with suspicion rather than welcome, Ruth’s story asks us to consider what it means to open a community to the stranger.
