  • What’s New at Family Tree Maker with Jewish Genealogy Society

    Mark Olsen will discuss Family Tree Maker and its current features with many tips and tricks to make your use of the program more effective. He will also demonstrate the recently announced FTM 2024 with some amazing new features. This presentation is for all levels of genealogists whether you are just getting started or very experienced.
    The meeting starts at 2:00 PM, but you are invited to come early to mingle and shmooze.

  • Kolot HaDorot: Celebrating 50 Years of Women in the Cantorate with WHC

    The American Conference of Cantors presents a historic concert celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cantor Barbara Ostfeld, the first female ordained cantor. This extraordinary musical event will feature multiple choirs, spanning generations of cantorial talent, performing a diverse repertoire from Renaissance compositions to contemporary pieces.

    The concert promises a powerful exploration of Jewish musical heritage, showcasing works that highlight the journey of women in cantorial leadership. Audiences will experience an inclusive performance featuring 200 cantors and musicians, presenting a unique musical narrative that spans different eras, geographical regions, and musical styles.

    Tickets are $18.00 ($20.57 with service fee) for Seniors and Students; $36.00 ($39.65 with service fee) for General Admission. All tickets include a dessert reception after the concert.

    Join us as historian Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome tells the dynamic and inspiring history of the LGBTQ+ community's original pride symbol by tracing the transformation of the pink triangle from a Nazi concentration camp badge into a widespread emblem of queer liberation, pride, and community.

    Drawing from unexplored archival sources and original interviews, Dr. Desai-Newsome showcases the voices of LGBTQ+ Holocaust victims and the many LGBTQ+ folks who found meaning in the pink triangle in a post-Holocaust world.     Come have fun and learn to play American Mah Jongg, an exciting four-player tile game with Chinese origins. Using 152 tiles depicting Chinese characters and symbols, players pick and discard in turn to form combinations found on the National Mah Jongg League's annual card of hands. Strategy, skill and luck are needed to be the first player to complete a hand and declare ÒMah Jongg!' This 4-session class will be taught in person at the Bender JCC by Jamie Grauer.

    *Space limited to 8 participants per class.

    *You will need to purchase a Mah Jongg card prior for the class. Cards can be purchased here.

    The Embassy of Sweden is excited to offer a selection of Swedish rooftop film screenings this summer that celebrate the rich cultural heritage and cinematic excellence of Sweden.

    Our next screening presents The Bridgeplayers (2025), a film about four women who survived Auschwitz as teenagers.

    Filmmakers Alberto Herskovits and Bengt Bok document four bridge-playing women and Auschwitz survivors as they witness a dramatically changing world in this unconventional film about the Holocaust. Despite their traumas and haunting memories, the four women have lived to nearly one hundred and are now among the few remaining to bear witness to the Holocaust. They live in Stockholm, have been friends for decades, and share a deep passion for playing bridge. Life proceeds as usual, but suddenly everything changes with the Hamas terror attack and the situation in Gaza. A unique film about the Holocaust and the art of survival.
