    There's a beautiful line in a recent New York Times movie review of The Worst Person in the World, named one of the best movies of the 21st century: ÒA life lived robustly is bound to include some detours.'

    Sometimes, we choose detours voluntarily while other times, detours are forced upon us. Either way, life rarely turns out the way we hoped or imagined. As the famous Yiddish phrase goes: Mann Tracht un Gott Lacht. ÒMan plans, God laughs.'

    It's hard to believe God is laughing at the way things have been going in our country lately. Some detours are one-way streets. ÒThat which has been twisted cannot be fixed' (Ecclesiastes 1:15). Have things become hopelessly broken, beyond repair? Is it too late to course correct?

    What is funny is that we continue to try to predict where this all leads. Whether we're hopeful or hopeless, many of us try to anticipate a future that hasn't yet come to pass.

    We'll be gathering together for tashlich (i.e. casting away), a cathartic tradition for the Jewish New Year in which we toss pieces of old bread (or pebbles, leaves, sticks, etc.) into a body of water to symbolically cast away regrets and disappointments from the past year.

    GatherDC and Rodef 2100 will provide the materials - just bring yourself! We look forward to coming together for this special tradition.

    What to expect: Join other Jewish 20s & 30s for ritual, reflection, and meaning-making as we head into the new year.

    __Explore Old Town on a walking scavenger hunt where you will learn about cool venues, solve fun tasks, and play Jewish geography (discover that we probably know the same people around the globe!)

    Join the Den for our annual Kayaking Tashlich experience on the Potomac River. The ritual of Tashlich, or Òcasting away', is conducted during the Ten Days between the start of Rosh Hashana and the beginning of Yom Kippur. We'll kayak out together to a location on the Potomac River where Rabbi Aderet will guide us through this powerful and meaningful ritual. You are then invited to enjoy the riverside scenery and find a spot to eat lunch together with other community members. Location shared with registrants. All are welcome!

  • Somatic Musical Tashlich Experience and Creek Cleanup with Mayim Chayim

    We will begin with a creek cleanup to thank the earth for sustaining us through this year. We will then engage in a somatic ritual combining Jewish tashlich, yoga, dance and Qigong elements to spiritually let go of what we do not wish to bring into the new year through guided movement. Next, the incredibly talented Hasan Bhatti will lead us in a musical mincha. Hasan is a seasoned song leader whose original work is featured in the Let My People Sing songbook. This grounding ritual experience will vitalize your senses, introduce you to great people and prepare you for Yom Kippur.
