Primary responsibility organizing activists nationwide & anchoring direct actions & legislative visits in DC.

As WC’s point-person in DC, the SJO will track priority federal legislation, opportunities for endorsement & advocacy. They'll signal key moments in the life-cycle of priority legislation when grassroots action can be most impactful & skillfully craft grassroots actions to maximize the power of our multi-generational activist base, with emphasis on activists over 60 y.o.

SJO will be the primary point person for WCs grassroots coalition efforts with allied organizations to advance our work on democracy & voting rights to advance worker rights, economic justice, immigrant rights & racial justice. They'll create & manage sign-on letters, contribute to planning & carrying out coalition actions & programs. Importantly, the SJO will anchor for WC’s participation in social justice actions in DC-area, from protests outside the Supreme Court, to hearings on the Hill, to actions like the annual March on Washington.

Open new doors & strengthen existing relationships for the WC with Congress, White House & relevant federal agencies that demonstrate our grassroots power, legislative priorities & Jewish values. CEO & Director of Social Justice take the lead in these relationships with federal leaders, the SJO cultivates those relationships with staff, identifies important new people we should meet, closely tracks contacts, assesses opportunities & advising where our values & grassroots power can be marshaled to build truly multiracial democracy & achieve worker, immigrant & economic rights we need.

SJO will assist with WC’s phonebanking, textbanking & postcarding efforts including promotion, recruitment & execution. Additionally, SJO will assist in catalyzing Democracy Circles including through public presentations & assisting circle support & resource development. Work with Marketing & Communications Manager to craft posts & engage on social media with focus on timely legislation & WC’s history of activism.

SJO will advance the progressive values & vision of the WC. Must be able to assist in translating our approach to Jewish social justice using excellent interpersonal & communication skills & tailored, outreach approaches to build ongoing relationships both with staff of key government offices & our activist base.

Reports to Social Justice Director. Additional duties at employer’s discretion. Requires attendance at WC events. This is an exempt, FT, union position, fully remote in DC area. $65 -75,000 d.o.e & excellent benefits package.

• Vacation: Each employee who shall have been employed for 6 months but less than 1 year by July 1st shall receive 1 weeks’ vacation with pay. Each employee employed for 3 years but less than 10 years, shall receive 3 weeks’ vacation with pay per year. Each employee who shall have been employed for 10 years + shall receive 4 weeks' vacation with pay per year. May carry over unused vacation days to the following year to be used by no later than August

• Sick Days: 12 sick days/year. May carry over 5 unused sick days & bank up to 20 unused sick days in any given year
• Annual 4% increase thru Sept 1, 2025, pursuant to Collective Bargaining Agreement for Union employees

Responsibilities
• Organize grassroots activists for WC’s social justice team
• Anchor for DC-area direct actions & legislative visits
• Track priority legislation; identify key strategic action
• Develop relationships w/ key federal staff to advance WC’s priorities
• Contribute to developing grassroots strategy & action in coalitions

Ideal candidate:
• 5-7 years experience in grassroots organizing
• Strategic thinker, tactician
• Familiarity w/ federal legislative process & grassroots lobbying
• Experience with Congress, White House, Agencies
• Fluent navigator of Jewish cultures & identities
• Self-starter, project manager
• Excellent public speaking/writing skills
• Listening skills, sound judgment, strong problem-solving skills
• At ease in busy environment; attention to detail
• Comfortable working remotely
• Experience working w/senior activism a plus.
