  • A Light in the Dark: DC Unity Suppers by Leap Forward & Herut DC

Reflection location TBA. , United States

Breaking bread together is a beautiful way to get to know our neighbours, hear each other's stories, and build strong communities. The Unity-Building Supper Series is a series of interactive dinners designed to honor and celebrate culture, artistry, and the unique traditions that shape us as human beings in the greater Baltimore and Washington DC region. We work to center creativity, collaboration, and community building with a focus on Black, Jewish, and Black-Jewish relations. For our event on January 9th, we will connect over a meal and have a conversation about what brings meaning to our lives as well as navigating the journey of being human and returning to the core truths within us. This month, we will discuss the theme of being a light in the dark, particularly centring the holidays of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

The Red Tent Fund, a nonprofit abortion fund rooted in the Jewish values and teachings that affirm the right to abortion

    Why The Red Tent Fund?

Historically, American Jews have supported abortion access in the United States. According to the Pew Research Center, over 80% of Jewish adults believe abortion should be legal in all or most cases. This deep-seated support often translated into contributions to abortion funds, which aligned donors' contributions with the Jewish values and teachings affirming the right to abortion.

After the tragic events of October 7th, many abortion organizations refused to acknowledge the atrocities and sexual violence against Jews and made Jews feel that they had to pick between their Jewish identity and their support for reproductive rights. This false choice created a disconnect for many Jewish supporters of abortion funds.

In November 2023, Allison Korman resigned from her position with the DC Abortion Fund for these same reasons and pub

  • On ÒJewBarrassment’: Jewish Wisdom on Not-Knowing with the Den Collective

    Samantha Greenwald

Several years ago, the term ÒJewBarrassment' came on the scene to describe a negative feeling some experience when they make a ritual Òmistake,' or don't know something relating to Jewish culture or observance. Whether you have heard of ÒJewBarrassment' or are new to the term, many of us can identify with the fear of not-knowing the Òright' thing to do in one setting or another–regardless of Jewish background, upbringing, or experience. In this spirit, join Rabbi Emmanuel for an open-hearted conversation and learning exploring Jewish wisdom and personal reflections on a wide-range of experiences and feelings associated with ÒJewBarrassment.'

All are welcome and no prior experience necessary. We will gather at a home in Arlington that is Metro accessible. Address will be shared with registrants.
