    Join JUFJ for Lag B'Omer on May 15th from 7:00 PM-8:30 PM as we enjoy a bonfire and phonebank to mobilize our community around DC Council's budget process. This event combines some of our favorite things: Jewish ritual, progressive organizing, being together as a community, and FIRE (in a safe and controlled environment!) Pay equity for early childhood educators, investing in safe communities by making sure everyone has a roof over the head, and so much more is at stake. Through collective action, we have the power to shape how our tax dollars are spent to be more in line with our values. That's why we'll be asking our friends and other JUFJers to advocate for funding for key programs as the Council shapes next year's local budget. Campfire-appropriate snacks will be provided. Location will be sent out ahead of the event.

  • “Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round” Screening & Talkback with WHC

    When five Howard University students sat on a segregated Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. When the largely Jewish community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, the first organized interracial civil rights protest in U.S. history was born.

    Produced and directed by Ilana Trachtman (daughter of WHC's longtime Hebrew teacher Gerdy Trachtman), the film has played at festivals across the country. Following the screening, there will be a discussion between Rabbi Sue Shankman and Pastor Mark Thomas of Contee AME Zion Church, moderated by Professor LaNitra Berger of George Mason University.

  • Hadar DC: Spring Beit Midrash with the EDCJCC

    Tehillim (Psalms) are an integral part of davening, although davening often doesn't provide the space to really dig into and reflect on some of the themes of these holy texts. In this three part series, we'll spend time in havruta (paired learning) exploring the language of key psalms from davening as well as learn together midrashim from Midrash Tehillim that will help us uncover key themes and expand our understanding of this rich liturgy. You'll come away with new insights into tehillim and a deeper relationship to the text.

    This class is held in person at the Edlavitch DCJCC on Thursday evenings, May 15-29. Free to attend, but registration is required.

    About the Instructor: Rabbi Avi Strausberg is Senior Director of National Learning Initiatives at Hadar and is based in Washington, D.C. She received her rabbinic ordination from Hebrew College in Boston and was a Wexner Graduate Fellow.

    We'll kick things off with awesome kids' activities–play-archery, kite flying, giant inflatable balls, and more–starting at 5:45 PM.

    Then we'll gather around the bonfire for s'mores and a special outdoor Kabbalat Shabbat service at 6:30 PM, featuring Torah teachings from our incredible tenth grade class.

    At 7:30 PM, we'll enjoy a cookout-style Shabbat dinner with kosher and veggie dogs and all the fixings (you bring the dairy-free, meat-free sides and desserts).

Invasive plants are a major threat to our fragile forests, and stopping their spread helps allow native plants to thrive in the understory.
