Meet Jessa: Jewish Cupcake Decorator of the Week

by Allison Friedman / July 29, 2020

Jessa is all about traveling and spending time outdoors each day. But it’s good food that has kept her inspired and creative these past few months. Read on to learn all about Jessa, her latest recommendations for Netflix, and what might surprise you most about this cupcake-decorator extraordinaire.

Allie: How did you wind up in DC?

Jessa: I’m from California and went to college in Seattle at University of Washington, where I studied political science and sociology. I knew I wanted to live in DC after school and got a job at University of Maryland Hillel right after college. I’ve been here ever since.

Allie: Do you still work in that field?

Jessa: I was — I was working as the NFTY Mid-Atlantic Regional Director for the last two years, but my position was eliminated due to the coronavirus. So, I am trying to figure out what’s next. I’d love to work in education policy or voter accessibility – something that can empower people.

Allie: Describe your dream day in DC in a post-pandemic future.

Jessa: I’d start getting brunch somewhere with friends. I love all the museums here. I think it’s so cool they are all free. So, I’d probably go to the American History Museum and, ideally, it wouldn’t be too crowded. I’d go get some ice cream at Jeni’s, and then go to a yoga class at Yoga Districtwhich is right nearby. After that, I’d have people over and hang out on the rooftop of my building. Then, I’d just watch TV and fall asleep.

Allie: Any favorite TV shows at the moment?

Jessa: I’ve recently taken up a big interest in food related shows. I really like The Final Table on Netflix.

Allie: Are you big into cooking?

Jessa: I enjoy learning about food and cooking more than cooking myself. I just started a blog about food – where food comes from and why we love it – but haven’t published it yet. I have gotten into baking throughout quarantine.

Allie: What do you enjoy baking?

Jessa: I’ve been learning how to frost and decorate cupcakes. So I’ve been doing a lot of cupcake baking, I like chocolate and mint chocolate flavored best, and then I try out different cupcake decorating techniques. Playing with food and making things is a great stress reliever, and a great way to spend free time.

Allie: What would you say is the best DC cupcake spot?

Jessa: Baked & Wired

Allie: If you could pick a flavor of ice cream that describes you, what would you pick and why?

Jessa: I would be Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food, because that flavor takes a lot of things that are already really good on their own and then brings them together to make them even better. And I feel like I take bits and pieces of people that I’m with, different interests, and cultures and try to put it together into myself.

Allie: What’s at the top of your life bucket list?

Jessa: I like traveling a lot. It’s been hard for me to be in one place for this long. I’d love to travel to Morocco. It looks so beautiful and interesting, and has so much history and culture to offer.

Allie: What’s one coping tip that’s helped you through this pandemic that you want to share with Jewish DC?

Jessa: Go outside, everyday. Go first thing in the morning if it’s going to be really hot. Fresh air and natural light adds so much everyday.

Allie: What would people be most surprised to know about you?

Jessa: That I’m from Southern California. People are often surprised I’m from there, since I don’t necessarily fit into the stereotype of what “LA people” are like.

Allie: When Jews of DC Gather…

Jessa: …we eat delicious food together!
