SUMMARY:Beyt Tikkun Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: Parsha Ki Tisa
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: Parsha Ki Tisa\nSaturday\, March 15th\nEmeryville\, CA & online\n9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study\nRegister Here \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. After Torah study\, we enjoy a vegetarian potluck meal together and have an opportunity to deepen our connection with one another. If you are able\, please bring a vegetarian dish to share with others. For those joining us online\, we invite you to also bring food to eat after the service. We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha this week\nThis week\, we will discuss the Torah parshat Ki Tisa. In this parsha\, the Israelites build the Golden Calf. We will explore:\nWhy the people may have wanted or needed an idol.\nWhat they hoped it would replace or how it would serve them.\nWhether there are any similarities today.\nWe will also discuss Purim and the Book of Esther\, which is read during Purim\, taking place this week on March 13th-14th.\nPurim is traditionally a time of joy and celebration. We are taught that Purim reveals how the boundaries between good and evil are blurred and confusing—a reminder that we too can become the oppressor.\nIn the Book of Esther\, particularly the often-omitted last chapter\, Esther orders the genocide of an entire people\, believing that murdering the other is the only way to save the Jews. This raises deep and relevant questions for today.\nSome Israelis attack Palestinians during Purim\, believing that the mandate to wipe out the other to protect Jews is justified both biblically and ethically.\nIn our discussion\, we will explore:\nThe meaning of this story.\nWhether we should read the Book of Esther or celebrate Purim.\nAnd more.\nWe hope you can join us for these rich and thought-provoking discussions.\nAccess Information\nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. Address will be provided once you register.\nAccessibility: There are 4 steps to enter the house and 4 steps to the backyard (if people choose to go there.) The bathroom is not wheelchair accessible. There are couches\, chairs\, and floor pillows for seating. Please try to be scent-free. A retriever/labrador dog lives in the home but will not be present. A cat has lived there previously.\nCOVID: Masks are optional. Please don’t come if you have any symptoms. Air filter provided. SUMMARY:Shabbat services and Torah study with Beyt Tikkun
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: Terumah\nSaturday\, March 1\nEmeryville\, CA & online\n9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha this week\nWe’ve left Egypt and continue on our liberation journey in the desert. We have received the 10 speech acts and some concrete laws to help us live together as a community. This week we read parshat Terumah. In this parsha\, we are given the first instructions for building a sanctuary in which the Divine can dwell. The Divine tells Moses to speak to the Israelites and tell them to bring gifts to the Divine. Interestingly\, this is not a requirement\, but rather an invitation – only those whose heart is so motivated to do so. The word for “gift” is terumah. The root of that word is resh\, vav\, mem (רום)\, which means to uplift. In other words\, you are invited to bring a gift to help build the sanctuary for the Divine to dwell and in so doing\, you are uplifted. You give the gift to uplift yourself\, to draw yourself closer to the Divine. If we participate in building a sanctuary for Divine presence to dwell\, we end up being uplifted. \nThis Shabbat marks the first day of the month of Adar. We are taught that when Adar arrives\, we are to cultivate joy. (Babylonian Talmud\, Ta’anit 29a) Even in the face of struggle and difficulties\, it is upon us to cultivate joy. Joy can help us navigate these challenging times and stay engaged. \nAs we try in our movements and in our lives to build a holy world worthy of Divine presence\, a world where all life is seen and treated as a manifestation of the Divine\, what is your unique gift that you want to contribute from your heart? And how might that help you cultivate joy in your life? \nWe hope you will join us either in person or on Zoom for spiritually meaningful prayers and a rich discussion. \nLocation: Rabbi Cat’s home in Oakland\, about 0.5 miles from MacArthur BART Station. SUMMARY:Shabbat services and Torah study with Beyt Tikkun
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat Services and & Torah Study: Mishpatim\nSaturday\, February 22nd\nEmeryville\, CA & online\n9:30am Shabbat service // 10:30am Torah study \nYou can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha this week\nLast week we received the 10 Speech Acts with broad moral principles for how to live our lives as individuals and how to build a community. Mishpatim sets forth more concrete rules and guidelines for how to live. It reads like a legal code\, both criminal and civil. We will critique and discuss these various laws\, what they may have meant at the time\, whether they were more “advanced” than the laws by which other societies lived at the time\, and how we feel about them today. There are laws about slavery\, intentional\, unintentional\, and neglectful killing\, injury to other humans and animals\, and distinctions between slaves and others. \nThis parsha repeats two times (of the 36 times in the Torah) that you are not to oppress or wrong the stranger for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. Remember where you came from. Remember you were slaves and are commanded to have compassion and empathy – that is our inheritance. God warns that if you don’t\, God will hear their cries and heed them and put you to the sword and your wives will become widows and your children orphans. \nThere are many instances in the parsha when God warns of consequences if the rules are not followed. How do we feel about a God that enacts punishment in this way? Is there another way to understand this? \nWe hope you will join us either in person or on Zoom for spiritually meaningful prayers and a rich discussion. \nAccessibility & Covid Practices for this gathering:\nShabbat Services and Torah Study are held at Rabbi Cat’s home. She has a dog that lives in the house (he will not be present). We encourage people to wear a mask if that is comfortable for you. There are 4 steps to enter the house. The house is one story. There are couches\, dining room chairs\, and a floor for seating (along with pillows one can sit on on the floor). Please try to be scent-free. \n \n \nOrganization: Beyt Tikkun

SUMMARY:Beyt Tikkun Shabbat Services & Torah Study: Beshalach & Tu B’shvat
DESCRIPTION:You can join us either in person or on Zoom for Shabbat services and/or Torah study. If you are in the Bay Area\, we’d love to have you join us in person. This week\, in addition to Shabbat morning services and Torah study\, we will also host a hybrid Tu B’shvat seder. We’d love to have you join us. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha this week\nWhat is going on here? Pharaoh lets the Hebrews go after the slaying of the firstborn sons of all Egyptians but then God stiffens Pharaoh’s heart so he will pursue the Hebrews and so “I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his host; and the Egyptians shall know that I am יהוה.” Why is God hardening Pharaoh’s heart? Sounds like God is on a power trip to prove that this God\, the Hebrew God YHVH\, is the most powerful God of all. God seems to be in competition with Pharaoh and the Egyptian gods. God\, apparently\, still has some growing to do! \nThe text continues: “And so they did.” In hindsight\, Pharoah decides it is not such a great idea to let all the Hebrew slaves go\, who after all will do all the manual labor in Egypt for free? The slaves\, it turns out\, are rather central to the socio-economic power structure in Egypt. \nAs the Trump administration carries out raids on immigrant communities and peoples\, will the administration eventually realize the importance of immigrants to the well-being of our society? In our Torah story\, we are told that the mass multitudes fled with us. In other words\, there were many other people in Egyptian society who saw the injustices and chose to leave the society when the opportunity presented itself. What is needed of the mass multitudes today? How can we stand up as our cities and communities are being ripped apart by a staggering number of policies and actions\, affecting immigrants\, LGBTQI people\, and so many others? Rather than flee or turn away\, will we stand together and refuse to back down? \nWe are also told that many Hebrew slaves did not leave\, perhaps too scared to face the unknown. It seems that many in our community are refusing to face the ongoing horrors in Gaza and the West Bank. Trump just announced that he wants to take over Gaza and kick all the Palestinians out. While not surprising\, it is horrifying. Facing the unknown and being willing to honestly look at what has been and is happening is necessary. What will it take for us to do so? \nTu B’shvat Seder\nWe will begin our Tu B’shvat Seder after Torah study at 11:30am PST. Our seder is based on the Kabbalist Tu B’shvat seder\, grounded in the four worlds\, tasting fruits and nuts\, and drinking mixtures of white and red wine or grape juice unique to each of the four worlds: Asiyah\, the world of embodiment and action; Yetzirah\, the world of formation and emotions; Briyah\, the world of creation and thoughts; Atzilut\, the world of spirit and soul. Tu B’shvat is an opportunity to reconnect with our spiritual selves and renew our commitment to both tikkun ha-nefesh (repair of our soul) and tikkun ha-olam (repair of the world). We will have opportunities for sharing and reflection as well as meditation. Ami Goodman will lead us in song and Abby Caplin will share some of her poetry. It will be a nourishing balm during these turbulent times. \nAccessibility & Covid Practices for this gathering:\nThe house has 5 stairs to enter. We will be sitting in a living and dining room\, either on couches or the floor (cushions provided). During the Seder\, we will be sitting at a table with chairs. Please feel free to bring a seat or cushion that is comfortable for you. The windows will be open and an air filter will be on. If you are able to wear a mask\, we request that you do so. If you are sick\, please join us on Zoom. \nIf you intend to join us in person\, please email Austin at austin@beyttikkun.org by Thursday at 5:00pm PST so we know to expect you. This is particularly helpful for us to predict how much supplies to purchase for our Tu B’shvat seder (if you forget to do so\, no worries\, please come either way!). \n \n \nOrganization: Beyt Tikkun

We will keep the room open so folks can connect with each other after the service. \nA peek into Torah study with us and the parsha this week\nThis week’s parsha\, Vayigash\, continues with the saga of Joseph and his brothers. Last week we read that Joseph hid his divination cup in Benjamin’s sack and then had him arrested\, threatening to make him a slave. This week\, Judah steps up and begs Joseph to let Benjamin go free and take Judah in his place. Judah’s pleas pierce Joseph’s heart and he exposes himself to his brothers. Joseph sends the brothers back to Jacob and their families to bring all of them and their belongings to Egypt to settle. \nMeanwhile\, the famine in Egypt continues and the people are going hungry. During the years of abundance\, Joseph gathered all of the reserved grain from the people and during the famine he required them to buy back their grain. When they run out of money and can no longer afford to purchase the grain\, they are required to sell their land and themselves as servants to get food for themselves and their families. In other words\, Joseph has manufactured the situation such that the Egyptians become indentured servants to Pharaoh. This sets the stage for the enslavement of Joseph’s descendants generations later. \nAs we watch the ongoing manufactured famine in Gaza\, along with the genocide\, I cannot help but wonder how this horror today will impact future generations. What can we learn from our Torah to help us speak truth to power and challenge injustice so that we can shift from imposing and causing more harm and trauma to beginning the long\, hard journey of tikkun––healing\, repair\, and reparations? \n \n \nOrganization: Beyt Tikkun
