The New Synagogue Project is building a community that is spiritually vibrant, radically inclusive, and reflects our vision for a world of justice, equity, and liberation. Our community is built by and for religious, secular, and atheist Jews, families with kids, partnered and single people, queer and trans people, disabled and chronically ill people, D/deaf and hard of hearing folks, interfaith families, Jews of color and white Jews, and anyone interested in exploring and experiencing Jewish life. We are a multiracial community committed to dismantling racism and white supremacy, and we are committed to providing a spiritual and communal home for those who may not always easily be able to find one elsewhere.
Our membership consists of 250+ households representing nearly 500 people, including 90 children, and our current staff includes 2 full-time (Rabbi and Synagogue Director) and 2 part-time (Education Director and Administrative Associate) roles. All staff work closely in partnership with an active lay leadership, including our 16-member Team of Instigators (NSP’s board), 7-member Strategy Team (our executive board), and many other volunteer leaders who coordinate teams and programs.
The JOC Coordinator will partner with the Synagogue Director and Jews of Color Space Team leads to build relationships with Jews of Color and multi-racial families who are part of or interested in the NSP community, develop and support the leadership of JOCs, and implement strategies for deepening a sense of belonging through NSP programming.
The creation of this new position is the result of several years of community building among Jews of Color by NSP’s JOC Space Team co-leads, who have identified the need and desire for additional capacity to invest in relationships with JOCs. It also comes after NSP has clarified our anti-racism goals, established our vision that all Jews and fellow travelers across racial and ethnic identities experience a sense of belonging in our community, and designed processes for ongoing learning, reflection, and policy-making to embed our anti-racism values in our practices. We continue to learn from our mistakes and work to get closer to being the community we hope to be. This position is one of a constellation of strategies we are implementing to meet our anti-racism goals, engage Jews of Color, and more fully live into our vision as a community.
This position is based in the DMV, starting at 10 hours/week. Compensation is $35/hr, plus healthcare reimbursement up to $200/mo and a $20/mo technology stipend. Laptop will be provided if needed. NSP does not have an office; the JOC coordinator will work from home as well as attend in-person meetings and events in DC in accordance with NSP’s COVID policy. Evening and weekend availability is required, including Shabbat for JOC Space and communal events. The position will report to the Synagogue Director, meet regularly with the JOC Space leads, and have access to external mentorship support from a Jewish communal leader of color, to be identified in conversation with the JOC Coordinator once hired. As this is a new position, the specific goals and objectives will be defined collaboratively between the JOC Coordinator, Synagogue Director, and JOC co-leads, with attention to what is reasonable to take on in 10 hours/week. We hope to expand the position to 20/hrs a week a few years from now.
-Engage in 1:1s to welcome, build relationships with, and develop the leadership of JOC members and prospective members of NSP
-Support JOC Space Leads with building community among JOCs and multiracial families at NSP, including envisioning and planning JOC Space programming, such as JOC Shabbat and holiday events
-In partnership with JOC leaders and in response to JOC interests, support community-wide, JOC-led programming (e.g. guest speakers, teachers, and service leaders)
Additional responsibilities as time allows:
-Support implementation of Anti-Racism Working Group work and plans, e.g. anti-racism leadership training and orientation for new members
-Partner with other NSP staff and leaders to ensure community programming fosters a sense of belonging among JOCs
-Partner with the Synagogue Director in fundraising efforts to cultivate support from funders for JOC programming
