SUMMARY:Forging a More Perfect Union: American Jews & Democracy w/ Capital Jewish Museum
DESCRIPTION:Journey through the history of American Jewish political activism in the 20th and 21st centuries. \nIn this 250th year since American independence\, Professor Lauren Strauss goes beyond theoretical discussions about the nation’s founding to focus on the many ways that Jewish Americans have engaged politically. From the streets to the courts to Capitol Hill\, Jews in the U.S.—especially in Washington\, DC—have helped to redefine what it means to live in a democracy.  \n  \nPresented in partnership with Moment Magazine. \n  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER \nLauren Strauss teaches Jewish history and literature at American University in Washington\, DC\, and is Director of Undergraduate Studies for AU’s Jewish Studies Program.  A scholar of American Jewish political and cultural history\, Strauss is completing her book Painting the Town Red: Jewish Visual Artists\, Yiddish Culture\, and Radical Politics in Interwar New York.  Her next book will explore the political activism of DC Jews and the relationship between American Jews and democracy.  She lectures widely\, is a commentator at Jewish cultural events and in the press\, and has served as historian for several museum exhibits.  She is also active in “shared society” groups that focus on Arab-Jewish relations in Israel\, and in Black-Jewish dialogue groups in the DC area.\nCost Range: $5 – $10 \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: Capital Jewish Museum \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Certificate Program Begins: American-Israeli Relationship w/ Hudson Institute
DESCRIPTION:Our policy certificate programs aim to give participants practical knowledge of key policy areas. Over four days in Washington\, candidates engage with the theory and practice of politics and wrestle with the complexity of contemporary policy issues.\nRecent trends have made many Americans doubt the contributions of the Jewish faith\, people\, and homeland to liberal democracy\, as well as the importance of a strong American-Israeli alliance to our national security. This program asks whether support for Israel is essential to our national security and liberal democracy more broadly. Seminars take up the Hebrew Bible\, American history\, and IR theory. Finally\, a review of the rationale for Operation Epic Fury is followed by an exercise simulating further crisis in the Middle East. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: Hudson Institute Political Studies \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not
