SUMMARY:Sarah Hurwitz Author Talk with Rabbi Aaron Potek at Sixth & I
DESCRIPTION:At thirty-six\, Sarah Hurwitz–former head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama–attended an introduction to Judaism class on a whim and was astonished to discover thousands of years of wisdom about what it means to be human. Years later\, as she wrestled with what it means to be Jewish at a time of rising antisemitism\, she wondered where the beauty and depth of the Judaism she discovered as an adult had been all her life. \nSeeking answers\, she went back through time to find how hateful myths about Jewish power\, depravity\, and conspiracy have shaped not just how others think about Jews\, but how Jews think about themselves. She realized that her Jewish identity was the result of thousands of years of antisemitism and two centuries of Jews erasing parts of themselves in the hope of being accepted and feeling safe. \nIn As a Jew: Reclaiming Our Story from Those Who Blame\, Shame\, and Try to Erase Us\, Hurwitz–the author of Here All Along–documents her quest to take back her Jewish id

SUMMARY:Workshop on Grief\, Mourning\, and Healing with the New Synagogue Project
DESCRIPTION:Step into the High Holidays with intention. The Jewish month of Elul invites us to slow down and turn inward. This allows us to gently open ourselves to an emotion we often avoid: grief. We are given the spiritual space to sit with grief to experience healthy mourning and comfort. \n___ September 9 Workshop One will dive into resources to explore the sacred tasks of caring for mourners and end-of-life journeys. The workshop focuses on practical information while giving opportunities to share experiences and feelings of grief in a supportive and safe environment. \n__ September 16 Workshop Two will utilize the healing and creative process of Huichol yarn art\, accessible to all skill levels\, to process grief in a nonverbal way. There will also be small group conversations on mourning and healing as people work on their art. \nChildcare and a light dinner are provided with prior registration. Attend one or both sessions–each stands on its own while building on shared themes.

SUMMARY:Wednesday Study Group: "Moses\, Moses" & the Burning Bush with WHC
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Eliana Fischel in a deep exploration of Moses’ first encounter with the Holy One. The beginning of Moses and God’s relationship can teach us about our own fears\, vulnerabilities\, and power when in relationship with others. In another year of Òunprecedented times\,’ this text feels particularly poignant. Who knows?! Your insight may even make it into Rabbi Fischel’s High Holy Day sermon! \nClass Schedule\nAug. 13–What Happens in the Wilderness? Ex. 3:1\nAug. 20–What Happens When We See? Ex. 3: 2-4\nAug. 27–What Happens When We Are Called? Ex. 3:4\nSept. 3–What Happens When We Are Mindful? Ex. 3:5\nSept. 10–What Happens When We Choose to Acknowledge Suffering? Ex. 3:6-10
