SUMMARY:Shavuot Festival and Yizkor Service with Washington Hebrew Congregation and 2239
DESCRIPTION:Judaism’s three major pilgrimage festivals–Passover\, Shavuot\, and Sukkot–were times when Israelites traveled to the Temple in Jerusalem to celebrate and worship\, each aligned with a key moment in the agricultural harvest. Though the pilgrimages ended after the Temple’s destruction\, the festivals remain central to Jewish life\, marked today by synagogue services and\, in Israel\, visits to the Western Wall.

SUMMARY:Free Press in a Free Society with Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia
DESCRIPTION:A free press is one of the bedrock principles of American democracy. However\, in recent years\, amid extreme polarization\, the media has come under scrutiny for how they deliver the news\, while public figures have demonized the journalism industry and stoked anger among viewers. \nOnce-revered journalists like Murrow\, Cronkite\, Woodward and Bernstein have been replaced in part by a new generation of news professionals who emphasize social media views and sensationalist commentary over accurate and well-sourced information. \nOur distinguished panel of diverse journalists will discuss how we arrived in an era where the weaponization of information has become commonplace in media and the public discourse. We’ll also assess whether the Fourth Estate can still be a beacon of truth in our deeply divided society and what can be done to regain the trust of skeptical consumers. Audience Q&A to follow panel discussion. \nPanelists:\nMarvin Kalb\, veteran journalist\, author\, and Founding Direct

No prior experience necessary. We will gather at a park in DC that is Metro accessible. Exact meet up location will be shared with registrants.\nMinimum Suggested Donation Amt: 18

SUMMARY:Meeting and Discussion with Standing Together DC
DESCRIPTION:Becca Strober was most recently a senior director at the Israeli organization Breaking the Silence\, where they also worked as the Director of Education. They were an Educational Coordinator at the Organization Sadaka-Reut between 2016-2018. Becca is a co-founder of Midreshet Dror (freedom school) for this generation of young organizers and community leaders. SUMMARY:The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg with Director Q&A with NMAJMH
DESCRIPTION:25th anniversary screening of documentary about an extraordinary baseball player and World War II soldier who became an American icon. \nÒThe Life and Times of Hank Greenberg’ is a humorous and nostalgic documentary about an extraordinary baseball player who transcended religious prejudice to become an American icon. Detroit Tiger Hammerin’ Hank’s accomplishments during the Golden Age of Baseball rivaled those of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. This compelling documentary examines how America’s first Jewish baseball star was a beacon of hope to American Jews who faced bigotry during the Depression and World War II. In 1941\, Greenberg enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces\, serving his country during World War II and pausing his baseball career. \nAviva Kempner joins us for Q&A following the film.
