SUMMARY:Textual Audacity: Talmud for the Progressive Soul with Rav Avigayil Halpern
DESCRIPTION:Each class will be a deep dive into one Talmudic text on a topic relevant to Jews engaged with the Left. We’ll use some supplemental materials to inform our reading\, but the core of our study will be the Talmud and its commentaries. Everyone is welcome\, but the target audience is Jewish people seeking spiritual nourishment as we engage in the work of building a better world\, whatever that looks like for you! \nThe class time will be split between chavruta (paired independent study\, with guidance from me) and full-group discussion. My goal is for the full-group discussion to feel exciting\, stimulating\, and accessible to people with a wide range of previous Talmud experience\, whether this is your first time encountering the Talmud or you learn Gemara regularly. I will strive to match chavrutot based on your learning needs and goals\, particularly around preferring to learn in the original language or in translation. Consider inviting a friend who you might like to be your chavruta! \nT

These tools are helpful for any young adult wanting to become a lay leader and taking a more active role in their communities\, without necessarily contributing a monetary gift.\nThis workshop is intended for young adults ages 22-35. Light refreshments will be provided.\nRSVPs are appreciated.

SUMMARY:First Session of Jewish Welcome Workshop with Sixth & I
DESCRIPTION:This 38-week course is designed for those interested in learning more about Judaism and/or converting. Participants learn both within the classroom and through immersion in the larger Sixth & I and DC community. This class is intended for people who are not Jewish\, or have recently discovered Jewish ancestry. At the end of the program\, non-Jewish participants will be prepared to convert to Judaism or to live as a Ger Toshav (Òfellow traveler’) with the Jewish people. \nThe annual course starts September 2 and runs through May 21\, typically on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. This class includes a mix of lectures\, group activities\, text studies\, and holiday celebrations. No Hebrew language knowledge is required. Those wishing to convert will meet with one of the rabbis individually during the year. The rabbi–in consultation with you–determines when you are ready for the actual conversion. \nIf you are interested in meeting with a rabbi before that time to discuss the process

We are meant to begin taking an account of our souls\, thinking about the moments we missed the mark\, and how we can do better in the coming year. This year\, we are offering space to start doing this work together. We will discuss themes of the High Holidays\, explore the theological implications of the prayers\, and start our own reflections. It will all culminate on Selichot\, when we will take a look at the confessional prayers as a community. We hope you will join us.\n—\nAm Kolel is a welcoming and diverse Jewish Renewal community located in Montgomery County\, Maryland and serving the Greater Washington\, D.C. metro area.
