SUMMARY:American Red Cross Blood Drive with Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims\, heart surgery and organ transplant patients\, and those battling cancer. In fact\, every two seconds\, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is likely that you or someone you know will need a blood transfusion in your lifetime. \nDue to recent drastic shortfalls of donations over the last several weeks\, donors of all blood types are critically needed\, especially those with type O blood. \nThe blood donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average. In order to qualify for whole blood donation\, you must be in good health and feeling well\, at least 16 years of age (with signed parental consent) and weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional eligibility criteria apply\, including certain medications\, medical conditions\, travel to certain countries\, and personal history. \nPre-registered participants only. No walk-ins.

SUMMARY:Community Sing and Havdalah with the New Synagogue Project
DESCRIPTION:Join NSP members for nights of summer song and Havdalah! Successful social movements and strong communities have one thing in common: embracing the soul-nourishing\, community-building\, and joy-sustaining power of singing together. \nDuring the heartbreak of this past year\, NSP’s Singing Team has gathered around a firepit each week to learn and lead new songs and nigunim. Now\, we’re bringing the community together for TWO “community sings” – public gatherings where people come together to sing collectively\, focusing on shared joy\, connection\, and participation rather than musical perfection – to close out Shabbat and make havdalah together! \nJoin us on July 19 and August 16 at 7:30-9:30pm to learn and sing together for our collective renewal and liberation. We’ll gather outdoors weather permitting\, in Petworth\, location to be shared with registrants. Hardbacked chairs will be available. \nOn August 16\, we will also have a clothing swap led by the Chesed/Community Care team! Do you

SUMMARY:Uplifting Incarcerated Voices with Free Minds with the Edlavitch DCJCC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of service with Free Minds Book Club and Writing Workshop! Free Minds supports incarcerated and formerly incarcerated adults in the DC Jail\, juvenile detention centers\, the federal prison system\, and reentry programs through classes and workshops focused on literary arts and social-emotional learning. Since its founding\, Free Minds has provided long-term\, ongoing support to over 1\,500 youth and adults. \nVolunteers will hear from Free Minds graduates about their experiences participating in the Free Minds program\, then have the opportunity to read poetry written by current students and provide positive feedback through notes and drawings. While this may seem like a small gesture\, many members share that receiving such encouragement reminds them that people in the community care and gives them strength to persevere. \nThis event is a combined program of the Center for Social Responsibility and the Youth Action Institute. Anyone over the age of 11 is welcome to

SUMMARY:Textual Audacity: Talmud for the Progressive Soul with Rav Avigayil Halpern
DESCRIPTION:Each class will be a deep dive into one Talmudic text on a topic relevant to Jews engaged with the Left. We’ll use some supplemental materials to inform our reading\, but the core of our study will be the Talmud and its commentaries. Everyone is welcome\, but the target audience is Jewish people seeking spiritual nourishment as we engage in the work of building a better world\, whatever that looks like for you! \nThe class time will be split between chavruta (paired independent study\, with guidance from me) and full-group discussion. My goal is for the full-group discussion to feel exciting\, stimulating\, and accessible to people with a wide range of previous Talmud experience\, whether this is your first time encountering the Talmud or you learn Gemara regularly. I will strive to match chavrutot based on your learning needs and goals\, particularly around preferring to learn in the original language or in translation. Consider inviting a friend who you might like to be your chavruta! \nT

SUMMARY:Interfaith Couples Workshop with Sixth & I
DESCRIPTION:This is a four-week discussion-based course designed for couples in their 20s and early 30s who do not yet have children. The workshop is held four to five times throughout the year. This cohort meets on Wednesdays\, August 6 – 27 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. \nRabbi Aaron facilitates a guided\, nonjudgmental space for Jews and their non-Jewish partners to talk\, learn\, and grow – together and as individuals. Each week the class discusses case studies\, written by the couples\, on a specific instance that the Jewish and non-Jewish partner felt raised questions in their relationship. \nText studies and articles supplement the class. Couples should make time for an additional hour each week to discuss the case studies with their partners. \nNo one will be turned away from any of our classes due to lack of funds. For more information\, please contact our Jewish Life Associate\, Robyn. \nRegistration for this series closes on Wednesday\, July 30 at Noon.

SUMMARY:August Griller Shabbat with Capital Qvellers
DESCRIPTION:Please join for our August Qvellers Shabbat! The Capital Qvellers are a queer Jewish social group of young professionals that gets together for monthly Shabbat dinners and occasional other events. \nThis was a hit last year so we’re bringing it back: Let’s gather in a lovely courtyard to welcome Shabbat and celebrate summer together. There’s a gas grill for us to share — I’ll provide some grilled goodies (veg- and non-veg) and summery treats like watermelon\, and people are encouraged to bring more stuff to put on the grill or a side dish. If it winds up being miserably hot outside (and/or raining) we can head in to the AC. \nEasiest accessed via the bus stop at 16th and R\, and convenient to (but also halfway between) Dupont Circle (red) and U St (green) metro stations. Dial 000 at the front door on 16th St and the front desk will buzz you in. It’s a straight shot across the lobby to the courtyard in the back!
