SUMMARY:Community Sing and Havdalah with the New Synagogue Project
DESCRIPTION:Join NSP members for nights of summer song and Havdalah! Successful social movements and strong communities have one thing in common: embracing the soul-nourishing\, community-building\, and joy-sustaining power of singing together. \nDuring the heartbreak of this past year\, NSP’s Singing Team has gathered around a firepit each week to learn and lead new songs and nigunim. Now\, we’re bringing the community together for TWO “community sings” – public gatherings where people come together to sing collectively\, focusing on shared joy\, connection\, and participation rather than musical perfection – to close out Shabbat and make havdalah together! \nJoin us on July 19 and August 16 at 7:30-9:30pm to learn and sing together for our collective renewal and liberation. We’ll gather outdoors weather permitting\, in Petworth\, location to be shared with registrants. Hardbacked chairs will be available. \nOn August 16\, we will also have a clothing swap led by the Chesed/Community Care team! Do you

SUMMARY:Echoes of Identity: French Opera and Jewish Life with Pozez JCC of Northern VA
DESCRIPTION:In Collaboration with Canto Vocal Programs\nFeaturing Maurice Lugassy\, professor of French culture and Canto Vocal artists \nWhat can opera tell us about identity\, exile\, and belonging?\nJoin Maurice Lugassy for a thought-provoking musical lecture that explores how Jewish stories\, composers\, and themes found a place on the grand stage of French opera. \nFrom the powerful drama of HalŽvy’s La Juive\, an opera of love\, faith\, and persecution\, to subtle threads of Jewish identity woven into the works of Bizet\, Saint-Sa‘ns\, and others\, this journey uncovers how opera became a space to express both cultural pride and profound struggle. \nBlending history\, storytelling\, and live musical excerpts\, this lecture reveals how Jewish life shaped\, and was shaped by\, the world of French opera. Whether through bold characters\, coded messages\, or the complex lives of composers\, Jewish voices echoed through the opera houses of France – sometimes in harmony\, sometimes in conflict. \nThe presentation
