SUMMARY:The Extraordinary Jewish Legacy and Experience in Shanghai with the EDCJCC
DESCRIPTION:The Defiant Requiem Foundation and the Edlavitch DCJCC are pleased to invite you to a special evening featuring Dvir Bar Gal\, renowned expert on the remarkable story of Jewish Shanghai. \nFor 100 years\, while Shanghai was being transformed from a modest port town into one of the world’s great cosmopolitan capitals\, a little-known and extraordinary chapter of Jewish life was unfolding. Three distinct waves of Jewish immigration\, from Iraq\, Russia\, and central Europe shaped the city’s culture and heritage. Baghdadi Jewish families became influential leaders in Shanghai’s commercial and civic life during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Russian immigrants left a long-lasting western culture in Shanghai’s classic-music\, theater and western medicine. And during World War II\, thousands of Jewish refugees found safe haven in Shanghai\, one of the only places in the world that offered refuge without visas. \nAt its height\, Shanghai’s Jewish population reached nearly 30\,000. But under the rise of communism\, the entire Jewish community of Shanghai vanished. What brought them to the “pearl of the orient?” Why did they all leave? And what remains today? \nJoin Dvir Bar-Gal for a compelling presentation as he uncovers the dramatic\, inspiring\, and eye-opening story of Jewish Shanghai – a story of refuge\, resilience\, and a remarkable legacy. \nAttendance is free\, but space is limited and registration is required. Please note that this event is being held IN PERSON and it will not be livestreamed or recorded. If you have any questions\, please contact Alexandra Zapruder at azapruder@defiantrequiem.org. \nThis program is a partnership of The Defiant Requiem Foundation and the Edlavitch DCJCC\, and it is supported by generous donations from Tina and Albert Small Jr.\, Debbie Ratner-Salzberg and Michael Salzberg\, and The Marta and Frank Jager Family Foundation. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: Edlavitch DCJCC \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Eilu v'Eilu: An Open Reflection Project with Am Kolel
DESCRIPTION:This gentle\, conversation-based program creates space for us to explore some of the most meaningful\, complicated\, and personal aspects of Jewish life. \nMany of the topics we’ll be discussing—God\, prayer\, Israel\, identity\, mortality\, and more—can be challenging to talk about\, even with people we know well. Eilu v’Eilu offers a warm\, guided space to dive deeply into our own thoughts and beliefs\, to practice articulating ideas that may feel tender or evolving\, and to listen generously to the experiences of others. \nEach session stands on its own\, and you’re warmly invited to join for as many—or as few—as you’d like. \nThese Thursday-evening Zoom gatherings (7:00–8:30 pm) are designed for curiosity\, honesty\, and genuine connection. There are no “right answers” to arrive at—just opportunities to reflect\, ask\, listen\, and share. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: Am Kolel \n \nLivestream or Virtual: Yes\, it is

SUMMARY:Modern Midrash & Post-Holocaust Jewish Thought with the Haberman Institute

SUMMARY:First Session of Giving Back Circle with the EDCJCC
DESCRIPTION:Join the EDCJCC’s inaugural Giving Back Circle—a giving circle with a twist! Instead of focusing on financial contributions\, this program centers on giving your time through volunteer work and community building. \nLed by volunteer leaders\, the group will select projects that align with the issues they care about most\, creating a meaningful way to give back to the DC community. This program is ideal for people who are excited to help design and shape their own volunteer projects\, and less suited for those who prefer drop-in or pre-arranged opportunities. \nThe first session will be held on Monday\, April 20\, from 6:00-8:00 PM and will include learning\, discussion\, and collaborative planning for the next six months. Together\, the group will choose projects and set a schedule\, with activities taking place on weeknights or weekends. The cohort will meet once a month for six months\, and participants are asked to attend at least 4 of the 6 sessions. \nThis program is open to adults ages 25–40 from any Jewish background. Registration is $25 per person; if cost is a barrier or if you have any additional questions\, please email Mira at msmith@edcjcc.org. During the program\, participants will also have opportunities to donate items or funds to specific projects. \n \n \nOrganization: Edlavitch DCJCC \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not
