SUMMARY:Yom Kippur Intentional Lunch Meetup with GatherDC
DESCRIPTION:There are many different ways to observe Yom Kippur\, and for some people\, fasting is not possible or not the right choice. If that’s true for you\, we invite you to join us for a gentle lunchtime meetup with others who are also not fasting.\nTogether\, we’ll share space and dive into learning about Yom Kippur as we honor what it means to care for our bodies and selves on this sacred day. \nPlease note: Food and drinks will not be provided\, as everyone’s nutritional needs are different. We encourage you to bring whatever food and drink will best sustain you. There will also be no expectation to share why you are not fasting – your presence is enough. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue

SUMMARY:Kayaking Tashlich on the Potomac River with the Den Collective
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the Potomac River for one of our most meaningful annual traditions of the High Holy Day season. \nDuring the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur\, Jewish communities around the world observe Tashlich\, the ritual of symbolically casting away what no longer serves us as we begin the New Year. Together\, we’ll paddle out on the Potomac\, where the Den rabbis will guide us through this powerful ritual of reflection\, release\, and renewal. \nAfterward\, you’re invited to linger by the river\, enjoy the scenery\, and share lunch with fellow Den Members as we continue the conversation on shore. \nThis gathering will take place in Northwest DC. Kayak booking information and the meeting location will be shared with registrants after the registration deadline. \nPlease note: In accordance with the Den’s security policy\, only those who register by Wednesday\, September 16 will receive kayak booking information and be able to participate in this gathering. Location details will be shared closer to the event date. Thank you for your understanding. \nSign Up by Sep 16 \n \nAccommodations: None \n \nOrganization: The Den Collective \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Honest to Goodness: A Teshuvah Workshop with Sixth & I
DESCRIPTION:Let’s be real: meaningful\, lasting change requires honest acknowledgment\, not self-punishment. With guest Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block\, explore the ancient practice of teshuva (return) as a framework for the kind of self-reckoning that actually sticks. \nDrawing on the Jewish ethical practice Mussar\, Chassidic wisdom\, and the surprising story of Yehuda\, you’ll be guided through reflection\, visioning\, and concrete intention-setting across four dimensions of our lives: our relationships\, our bodies\, our spiritual lives\, and our relationship to the planet. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: Sixth & I \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Preparing to Let Go: Creative Practice for the New Year with the Den Collective
DESCRIPTION:What are you ready to stop carrying into the year ahead? \nJewish tradition gives us powerful physical rituals for the inner work of the High Holy Days: casting away through Tashlich\, immersing in the waters of the mikvah\, fasting\, and other practices that invite us to mark change not only in our minds\, but with our bodies. Drawing inspiration from these traditions\, we’ll explore what it can mean to intentionally let go. \nJoin Rabbi Anna for a creative and experiential evening of reflection\, release\, and renewal. This gathering takes place during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah\, the Ten Days of Repentance\, a sacred stretch of time that begins with Rosh Hashanah and leads us toward Yom Kippur. These days invite us to turn inward\, take stock\, and consider what we are ready to change\, release\, and carry forward. \nThrough writing\, drawing\, personal reflection\, and small-group conversation\, we’ll consider the stories\, expectations\, habits\, and narratives we may be ready to release. We’ll close with a shared ritual moment\, giving physical expression to the inner work of making room for what comes next. \nThere is nothing you need to create perfectly\, solve\, or arrive already knowing. Come as you are\, with whatever you are ready to examine\, and perhaps whatever you are finally ready to put down. \nThis gathering will take place outdoors in Northwest DC. The specific location and additional details will be shared with participants after the registration deadline. \nSign Up by Sep 11 \n \nAccommodations: None \n \nOrganization: The Den Collective \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Remember & Return: Sarah\, Hannah & the Work of Becoming with the Den Collective
DESCRIPTION:On the first day of Rosh Hashanah\, we encounter two strikingly similar stories: Sarah and Hannah\, two women who move through longing and uncertainty before each is “remembered” by God and becomes a mother. Why do our tradition and our liturgy place these stories at the threshold of a new year? \nJoin Rabbi Anna Wolfe\, the Den’s Community Rabbi\, for an intimate evening of Jewish learning and conversation exploring Sarah and Hannah’s stories as a lens into the deeper work of teshuvah. Together\, we’ll consider Rosh Hashanah as a moment not only of return\, but of creation and re-creation: an invitation to nurture what is emerging within us\, release what has kept us stuck\, and imagine who we are still becoming. \nNo previous text study or Jewish learning experience is needed. Bring your questions\, your curiosity\, and whatever this season is stirring in you. \nThis gathering will take place in Northwest DC. The specific location and additional details will be shared with registrants after the registration deadline. Advance registration is required. \nSign Up by Sep 4 \n \nAccommodations: None \n \nOrganization: The Den Collective \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Elul Beit Midrash with Hadar DC\, DC Minyan\, and EDCJCC
DESCRIPTION:I Will Be What I Will Be: Teshuva\, the New Year\, and Becoming Ourselves \nGod famously reveals Godself to Moshe by the name “ahyeh asher ahyeh\,” meaning I will be what I will be. This session will include the opportunity to learn all together as well as time spent in havruta (paired learning). \nThis event is co sponsored by DC Minyan and EDCJCC. \n \nAccommodations: ADA Accessible Venue \n \nOrganization: Hadar DC \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:High Holidays Cheat Code: Understanding Services from the Inside with Sixth & I
DESCRIPTION:6:00 pm: Happy Hour\n6:30 pm: Class begins \nGoing to High Holiday services without any background can feel like seeing a movie in a language you don’t speak—you can feel the power of it\, but you’re mostly watching other people be moved by something you can’t quite access. \nIn this class led by guest Rabbi Jason Kimelman-Block\, who will co-lead this year’s High Holiday services with Rabbi Jenna\, learn about the structure\, symbolism\, and theology of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—the architecture of the prayerbook\, the meaning behind the central prayers\, what the shofar is actually trying to do to you\, and why the whole experience is more psychologically sophisticated than it might look. SUMMARY:Becoming a Better Ally with Profs and Pints DC
DESCRIPTION:Profs and Pints DC presents: “Becoming a Better Ally\,” on research-backed ways to effectively advocate for marginalized populations\, including the Jewish community\, with Hannah Snidman\, assistant professor of psychology at Marymount University and director of a Marymount lab focused on allyship\, social justice\, activism\, gender\, and equity. \nMarginalized groups are under extreme pressure in today’s political climate\, yet some who seek to come to their defense may unintentionally be causing further harm. \nLearn how you can become a better ally to those who face oppression due to gender\, race\, ethnicity\, or other factors with Hannah Snidman\, a psychologist whose research focuses on allyship and the experiences of gender minority members. \nProfessor Snidman will give her audience a basic understanding of Minority Stress Theory\, which explains how unique stressors experienced by members of marginalized groups often lead to disparities in areas such as mental and physical health\, substance use\, and healthcare utilization. \nShe’ll discuss research on how effective allyship can reduce prejudice toward marginalized people and serve as a buffer against the stresses it causes. Focusing especially on the transgender population\, she’ll describe research showing how would-be allies can unintentionally cause harm by\, for example\, invalidating perspectives or failing to follow through on promises. \nThe talk will look at future directions in allyship research\, including on best practices for helping immigrant communities. (Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Doors: $17\, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) \n \nAccommodations: None \n \nOrganization: Profs and Pints DC \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:A Jewish Sacred Place: Mikvah with Adas Israel Congregation Sisterhood
DESCRIPTION:Water is where the Jewish story begins. In Genesis\, before creation itself takes shape\, the spirit of God moves over the waters. The mikvah is a gathering of water used for ritual immersion. It connects us to that primordial moment and has been part of Jewish life for over two thousand years. \nIn this one-hour session\, we will explore the meaning\, structure\, and practice of the mikvah through both text and direct experience. We’ll begin with a guided discussion: What is ritual\, and what does it do for us? Why water? We’ll look at texts from Genesis and contemporary Jewish thinkers who illuminate how immersion has been understood as a gateway to renewal a moment of softening\, of reentry\, of transformation and creation choosing who we want to become when we emerge\, how we want to face the world. \nWe’ll then turn to the mikvah itself: what it means\, how it is built\, and the remarkable halachic requirement that living waters and the waters’ “kiss”. We’ll explore who uses the mikvah and why\, from traditional commanded immersions to the many new and unique ways people use this ancient practice. \nThe session concludes with a tour of the mikvah itself. No prior knowledge required. Come ready to ask questions and perhaps be surprised. \n \nAccommodations: None \n \nOrganization: Adas Israel Congregation \n \nLivestream or Virtual: No\, it’s not

SUMMARY:Art Under a Full Moon: Celebrating Tu B’Av with the Den Collective
DESCRIPTION:Tu B’Av\, the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Av\, is often known as the Jewish day of love. Ancient Jewish tradition describes people gathering in borrowed white garments and dancing in the vineyards\, celebrating connection\, possibility\, and joy. \nJoin us for an evening of learning\, creativity\, and reflection as we explore the history\, traditions\, and deeper meanings of Tu B’Av through Jewish text study and conversation. Together\, we’ll consider themes of love\, connection\, hope\, and renewal\, as well as the tradition of increasing Torah study during this season as the nights begin to lengthen. \nFollowing our learning\, we’ll engage in an art-making experience using the Jewish Studio Process\, a creative practice that emphasizes curiosity\, reflection\, and the process of creating rather than the finished product itself. Whether you’re an experienced artist or haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years\, this is an opportunity to explore\, create\, and connect in a supportive community setting. \nCome learn\, create\, and bask in the beautiful light of this special full moon. \nNo experience necessary.
