HIAS seeks a Volunteer Coordinator to develop and run a pilot program for community volunteer support for HIAS’ asylum seeking clients in the New York metropolitan area. S/he is responsible for the development and/or adaptation if resources and materials to recruit and train volunteers and interns; match volunteers with HIAS’ asylum legal clients, as well as organize, coordinate and manage volunteer support. The Volunteer Coordinator has experience in volunteer management, as well as providing case management and/or social services to asylum seekers or other vulnerable populations. The position requires candidates who are self-starters, creative, and can adapt quickly to changing demands and needs of refugees and the volunteers who wish to support them. The duration of this assignment is one year with the possibility of an extension based on the availability of funding.
•Designs and implements a pilot volunteer program, based upon recommendations from the needs assessment study.
•Creates outreach materials for individuals and partner organizations, including collaboration with legal and program staff on orientation materials and New York specific volunteer training curricula.
•Develops volunteer job descriptions, including low and high touch volunteer options.
•Performs volunteer outreach, recruitment, and interviews prospective volunteers to determine their level of commitment, area of interest and expertise.
•Determines asylum seeker client needs, in collaboration with HIAS legal staff; refers appropriate clients to receive services through the volunteer program.
•Serves as a point of contact for individuals, groups, and congregations interested in volunteering with asylum seekers in the New York metro area.
•Ensures that partner organizations and individual volunteers are grounded in the work, well oriented, acquainted with the skills needed and matched well to other volunteers and asylum seekers.
•Matches volunteers with clients, establishes clear expectations and provides ongoing supervision.
•Provides on-going support and feedback to engaged volunteers and partner organizations.
•Develops and maintains a volunteer database, tracking for client needs and other records.
•Gauges volunteer feedback and conveys it to HIAS staff on an on-going basis; troubleshoots and alerts legal staff of any issues related to volunteer engagement.
•Conducts exit interviews of departing volunteers to gauge feedback; incorporates volunteer feedback to modify the volunteer program, as needed.
•Develops and implements volunteer recognition procedures and events.
•Performs other functions, as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
•Undergraduate degree required; graduate degree preferred.
•Experience working in volunteer development and management; previous experience in case management and/or social services for immigrants and refugees; experience working with clients with traumatic histories preferred.
•Ability to serve vulnerable individuals and work with diverse populations.
•Must have a driver’s license with a clean driving record.
•Ability to work weekends and evenings.
•Excellent written, oral, technical and problem-solving skills.
•Autonomous self-started with the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
