Jewish Girl – Elyssa

What is something you wish you knew about D.C. before actually living and working here?—Ok the real question is why would you ever move from CA?
Hands down the weather. Nothing could have prepared me for the seasons out here. For one brief second I thought about hopping back on a plane after arriving in DC from sunny CA a day before snowpocalypse. As for what brought me to this place, the answer is a job working in health policy, aspirations to begin grad school (which I started), and of course the opportunity to live in one of the most amazing cities. I still miss my family, friends, and the wonderful state that is CA, but this place is definitely growing on me—snow, humidity, and all.

Which upcoming Jewish event are you looking forward to most?
The Afikomen Scavenger Hunt! I was put on a team with some incredible people last year and the majority of us are coming together to recreate the magic and earn the title that was almost ours. We plan to be the team to beat so watch out for us! The 11th Plague is back!

We hear your kugel has a following that spans coast to coast. Where did you get your coveted recipe?
I’ve never claimed to surpass the brilliance of a dish made by someone’s bubbie, but the one quintessential Jewish food I can make is in fact kugel. Many have challenged me to a kugel-off, but 4 out of 5 Jewish palates agree my kugel takes the prize. As for the recipe’s origin? Of course that’s a secret.

Favorite travel destination/future one?
I loved visiting Morocco. The market of Marrakesh was so vibrant and trekking through cities and experiencing a culture so different from my own left a lasting impression. I’m looking forward to climbing the Inca trail to see Machu Picchu late next fall. Nothing says adventure like a high altitude, alpacas, and visiting one of the wonders of the world.

Name a hobby people don’t know you have and how long have you been doing it?
Tap dancing. There, I said it. I have been tap dancing since I was 3 years old and should probably have opted for Broadway with those stats.
