Sixth & I Trivia Results

Each month, Sixth & I Synagogue and B’nai B’rith host a trivia competition for young professional Jews, emceed by Aaron Weintraub. Gather the Jews tracked down one member of this month’s winning team – Aliza – and quickly asked her about the victory.

GTJ: What prompted you to play in the trivia competition?
So I like Trivia. A lot. Actually, that’s an understatement. I love Trivia. It all started in June 2008 when I went to the inaugural Trivia Night at 6th & I. It was the first Trivia I had ever been to. And I’ve been to every one since then. I’ve tried Trivia at different bars over the past few months, but as far as I’m concerned, 6th & I has the best Trivia Night in town. When I was planning my vacation last year, I e-mailed the staff to make sure I wouldn’t be out of town on Trivia Night. It sounds a bit like an addiction; I prefer to call it a passion.

GTJ: What’s your area of expertise?
My area of expertise is Saved By the Bell. AC Slater’s real name? Albert Clifford, of course. Which famous actors were in the pilot? Scott Wolf and Jennie Garth. I also excel in the “Jew or Not a Jew” round. However, after a few months of Trivia, I realized that if I was going to get serious about winning, I would need to align myself with people who had a broader knowledge base than pop culture. I made a conscious effort to seek out these people. Whenever I met a seemingly intelligent person at a GesherCity event, I would invite him or her to join my Trivia team. At one event I met a guy who boasted about winning Trivia twice. Of course, I had to recruit him. He played on my team a few times, but we didn’t win. My recruitment efforts created some awkward moments because some guys thought I was hitting on them when I was purely using them for their intellect.

GTJ: How has your team fared in past months? Do you always win?
Last month we almost won. There was a three-way tie for first place. After the tie-breaker question, we placed third. This month, it once again came down to a tie-breaker question. In the end, our team wagered the more accurate guess of how many jelly beans were in a jar, and we emerged victorious. It also happened to be my birthday week, and winning Trivia was the perfect birthday gift.

1st place – TEAM NAME: Why is No One at Trivia This Week? TEAM MEMBERS: Aliza, Alanna, Sherri, Dalia, Lauren, Stephen, and Layat.

2nd Place – TEAM NAME: Most Annoying Time of the Year. TEAM MEMBERS: Benjamin, Lindsay, Deb, Adam, Eva, and Adam.

3rd Place – TEAM NAME: All I Want for Chanukah is a Honey-Baked Ham.

4th Place – TEAM NAME: Deis Deis Baby

5th Place – TEAM NAME: Splinters Schnitzel

The next trivia competition is on January 19.
